a body of books for the long way through

Some passages of a life cannot be gone around. They have to be gone through.

The Fire Community is an interlinked body of books — a philosophy, novels, books for children, healing companions, and songs — held together by one understanding: that we do not manage the hardest passages of a life, we move through them, and come out the other side whole and scarred and lit. Each book stands on its own. Together they span a whole human life.

When the words get in the way,
go and look at water.

A Companion for the Long Way Through

The Necessary Fire

A companion for anyone in the fire.

It will not tell you the fire is good. It will not hurry you. It does one thing: it walks beside you, names what is burning, and does not look away.

Nine fires, from what is burning to what the fire makes — read slowly, a page at a time, or opened on a hard night to whatever page it falls to. Made to be returned to, however long the way takes.

A digital edition — pay what you want. Suggested €4, or take it for nothing. No one in the fire is turned away.

The Books

One world, many doors — and not all of them open onto the same fire. From a four-year-old's first feelings to a philosophy of grief, the work spans a whole human life. Each book has its own light. Scroll on, and you'll feel them change.

Literary fiction

The Novels

Two novels · the community above the lake

The fire lived out in particular lives — in the intentional community in the Slieve Aughty mountains, through the turning of a year and a season's work.

Before Spring · Loch Gréine
Picture books · ages 4–8

The Iris Books

Eight · in watercolour

The gentlest doorway into the whole work. Eight tender picture books for small children — naming feelings, weathering grief, and learning they are seen and never too much.

I Feel Everything · One True Thing · No Is a Whole Sentence · and five more

Stories · ages 8–12

The Fire School Stories

Six · a teacher, a donkey, six children

Six interwoven stories for older children — each child meeting a fire of their own, and the one true question, in the small school above the lake.

Practical companions

The Healing Companions

Seven · a guide for nearly every life

For the empath, the parent, the couple, the worker, the elder, the young person, and the bereaved. Each names a particular fire honestly, then offers something you can actually do.

A songbook

Whole and Scarred and Lit

Songs of the community

The warmth of people gathered around a fire — songs of the community, opening with how the fire was first kept, and teaching you to make your own.

The German Edition

Das notwendige Feuer

Not a translation, but a re-rooting — the same fire, carried to Füssen and the river Lech: the turquoise water that carries the ground mountain, the still Forggensee of memory, the climb of the Kalvarienberg where the two directions meet.

The author

G. S. Maher

I wrote these books from my own long way through the fire. I came to believe that the hardest passages of a life are not problems to be managed or hurried past, but fires to be walked through — and that what we most need in them is not advice, but to be seen, and accompanied, and told the truth. That is what I have tried to make: a body of work that walks beside a person, names what is burning, and does not look away.

If you are in the fire as you read this — I see you. These books are for you.

G. S. Maher writes from the Slieve Aughty mountains of east Clare, Ireland, above the lake called Loch Gréine — the Lake of the Sun, dark water named for light. The Fire Community is the work of a single understanding pursued across many forms: a philosophy and its companion, novels, books for children, healing companions, and songs, all turning on one daily question — what is one true thing?

The work is rooted in landscape and in the conviction that healing is not the management of suffering but the long, circular, courageous passage through it — to a life that is whole, and scarred, and lit. A German edition, Das notwendige Feuer, carries the same fire to Füssen and the river Lech.

The warming fire

You do not only walk through the fire.
In time, you gather around one.

Come through the long way, and there is a hearth at the end of it — the fire you tend on purpose, and keep, and sit beside with others. Whole, and scarred, and lit.
